Strong as a Mother: Nursing-Friendly Activewear for Your Mom Bod

We’ve moved! Since creating this blog in 2017, we’ve launched Becoming Mama — artfully crafted fashions for bump to breastfeeding. Please visit our new blog for the latest and greatest. Happy mommy-ing!

For some it’s six weeks postpartum, for others six months. But at some point, you’ll probably decide tackle your first post-baby workout.

I delayed working out for quite a while because of extreme weight loss due to Ilyas’ food allergies. But, after about a year, I was finally ready to pick up those tired sneakers and head to the gym.

And that’s when it hit me.

I had spent a ton of time searching for breastfeeding-friendly clothing for work. And some threads for fun. But I had virtually nothing to exercise in.

So, I did what I do best, and started online shopping. 🙂 I was delighted to find some clothing lines started by moms, who, like me, realized they had nothing convenient to work out in. Here are some of my favorite finds:

Sweatshirt

If you love Under Armor or Nike’s Dry-Fit tops, you’ll love Cadenshae. Their activewear hoodie ($90) is made of a performance material that keeps you warm when it’s cool out, and feels breezey when it’s warm. It has two hidden zippers that run vertically over the breast. I really love the heathered gray look because it’s forgiving when your little one undoubtedly wipes his runny nose over your clean shirt. I’m sporting size large.

Long Sleeve Top

Cadenshae’s bamboo long sleeve top ($50) is a staple piece. I purchased it in black so that I could sport it at the gym or dress it up with other outfits. Hidden under a cardigan, it easily passes for smart casual. I snagged this one in a large as well.

Tank Top

Mitera’s Jennifer nursing tank ($48) is another piece that looks brilliant from work out to work day. The zipper is hidden under a decorative fold, and it features a beautiful crisscross pattern on the back. Another benefit – it’s made of a stretchy modal blend that makes it suitable during pregnancy. Seen wearing a large here – I like the fit a little better before I washed it, so I recommend ordering up a size.

Sports Bras

Truthfully, this is an area where I might not have the best advice for the majority of folks. As a smaller busted woman I can get away without much support. The basic Mirity nursing bras from Amazon do the trick for me. At $4 a piece, they can’t be beat.

I’d recommend the bustier ladies check out the variety of options Cadenshae offers.
